LED Energy Savings Calculators

Energy is valuable, so we strive to conserve it. A great way to conserve energy is to replace older energy-wasting lighting systems with newer LED systems.

The following calculators help you estimate energy cost and savings (gained by switching from older lights to new LED lights). The first calculator simply estimates the cost of any lighting system. The second calculator allows you to compare the costs of an older system with a newer LED system.

The ultimate result from these calculations is knowing your energy costs and savings - daily, monthly, and yearly. If you find, for example, that switching to an LED system saves you $500 a year, then your investment to purchase those LEDs will be offset by that amount every year. Typical times to pay back an investment in LEDs are from several months to a few years (depending on the number and type of fixtures and bulb you buy). Additional savings are realized because LED bulbs never need to be changed - unlike older halogen bulbs that last one or two years. Regardless of how long it takes to pay back your investment, switching to LEDs is the right thing to do for you, your family, and the environment.

Instructions

Total Watts. Be sure to use actual watts (sometimes referred to as Energy Consumption). Do not use Equivalent Watts.

Hours On per Day. If your system is on from dusk till dawn, that equates to 12 hours on per day. If your system is set to turn on at dusk, then off sometime during the night, then use 7pm (average sunset time) as the on time. For example, if your system is set to turn off at midnight, then the time on would be 12pm – 7pm = 5 hours.

Energy Cost. This is one of the charges that appears on your electrical utility bill. While it is usually expressed as $/Kilowatthour (KWHr), it may also be expressed as Cents/KWHr - in which case you would divide that value by 100 to use in the calculator. If you don't have access to your electrical bill, you can call your energy provider or go to the website of the U.S Energy Information Administration and access average $/KWHr in your region. Or, use the default value ($0.12) shown in the calculator - this is the national average (as of 12/15).
