There are essentially two types of landscape lighting transformers -- single tap 12v transformers and multitap transformers. A single tap transformer is limited as it can only output at 12 volts. Why is this a problem? Low voltage current has voltage drop, meaning the longer the run or the more load (i.e. landscape fixtures) the actual voltage reaching the fixture will drop well below 12 volts -- this results in dim, uneven lighting. Single tap transformers are generally only used in very small, limited applications like installing a few lights close to the transformer.
A multi tap transformer enables you to output at voltages from 12-22 volts to compensate for this voltage drop. For example, if you have 5 fixtures 75' from the transformer you can connect the cable to the 14 volt terminal on the multi tap transformer. The voltage will drop about 2 volts but will still be at 12volts by the time it reaches the farthest fixture. Low voltage landscape light bulbs are meant to run at 12 volts. If you do not compensate for the drop in voltage that occurs with all low voltage landscape lighting systems, your lights will be dim.
